No, it didn't die. I'm just sick of that horrible whining sound. Ok, here are my choices. Opinions and comments?
I currently have a Tbird 1.2@1.33 on a KT7a, cooled with a ThermoEngine (with Delta). I'll be overclocking more than that in the future, but I might be going for Northwood over Palomino (we'll see), so I'm hesitant to drop $50 on a HSF.

Seriously though... I use an Aavid HSF that was just the stock fan supplied for OEM processors by MultiWave and it works great. I only have a 1.13GHz, but it keeps it at a cool 38C. I have OCed to 1.3GHz with 1.85v before and my core temp never went above 45C. I can't find the model number anywhere though and Aavid doesn't list the one I have on their website for some reason. It has a fan that is only slightly smaller than the Delta, but it is a heck of a lot quieter. It is very quiet and only costs $12 plus shipping.

why not get an inexpensive, non peltier, non fridge water cooling system? might cost a bit more but i cant imagine that it wouldnt last for a long time. they cool better than a HSF fan(from what i understand), and it would deffinatly be much more quiet.
I've just bought Volcano 6Cu for my KG7 and TB 1.0G@1.33G. It keeps ~40C most of the time and has never raised higher 54C at max load (Burn-in test Toast ). It's relatively quieter than the old GlobalWin FOP-32.
Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.
If you decide to take at the Multiwave HSF that they sell with their OEM motherboard bundles, it is unfortunately one of the ones that they don't have a picture of. I didn't even know what it was until I built a 1GHz system for my dad and saw what a great HSF it came with. Then I ordered one for myself.

Burger, I bought an 80>60mm fan adapter and got the fastest 80mm sunon fan from heatsinkfactory.com, My temp only went up 2-3C, and it is ultra quiet. (I just kept the thermoengine btw).

I know everybody hates pre-builts but this is one area that the oems rule. My Dell has a huge case mounted fan that turns low rpms and is very quiet. No HSF is mounted to the CPU just the HS. A duct funnels the air from the case mount fan to the HS. Besides being effective and quiet the duct keeps wires and stuff out of the fan. Best cooling solution I've seen to date. I don't know if you could copy the design. I'll send pictures if you are interested.
Don't waste money on another HSF, get a resistor to slow down the fan by 1000RPM or so. Temps may rise a degree or two but it's worth it, to spare you from insanity.

FatBurger, I wouldn't throw out a relatively new platform (the Abit KT7A) just yet. I mean less than 6 months ago, the KT7A was the fastest motherboard available (along with the A7V133). If you get an Athlon XP 1800+ or a later version in the future you won't have to throw out all those components, unless you want to build another complete computer. I'm personally looking forward to adding an Athlon XP 1800+, 1GB PC150 SDRAM, Radeon 8500 (possibly DV), and a Promise RAID controller with another 40GB hard drive early next year.

You all know I am a big Swifttech fan. On that note, I must recommend the Swifttech MC-462-A, if it works with your mainboard. The fan I find not loud at all, but if you compare decible ratings, it is lower (but not much) than the Delta. The great thing about it though is that it is 80mm first of all, and also sounds more like a "roaring/rumbling" sound rather than a fast, high pitched whine. Compare here:
I believe the digital doc 5 will let you control fan speed. So you should be able to shut off fans and have them turn on automatically at a certain temp and run at slower speeds. It's only about 50~60 bucks I think at 3dcool.
Hey wait a minute. You are just fed up with the noise right? Just go to walmart and by some ear plugs for 4 dollars problem solved. Cheap and effective.
I got the fan adapters at another company, damn I cant recall which one, I got the sunon fans from the heatsinkfactory. Do a google search for 60mm to 80mm fan adapters, you should get several leads. I could sell you one of mine at cost if you want, Hell I can sell you the 80mm fan too, I will sell them both for 40 bucks.(which is what I paid including shipping 1995+5sh 10+5 SH) pm me if interested.

Hey Fatburger,
If this option (the Dell Shroud that is)looks enticing to you Try getting a new Fong-Kai FK320 case it has that mythical shroud feeding cooler air from outside the case and you can use a thermaltake Volcano 6cu (the one with the stock fan) to direct that fine cool air to the heatsink. Did just that on a 1.4 Ijust built and I'm maintaining a nice cool 34 degrees (celcius) while heavy into Quake3.
Keep it cool.

I found a 60mm-92mm adapter, so I'll probably go with that.
I'll have a look at the Fong-Kai case, too.
Update:
The case is a bit too much, and doesn't have enough drive bays. Sorry

Well, I tried the fan adapter. Didn't work. I booted up and went straight to BIOS to watch my temps. Climbed to about 49 before holding steady. Definitely too high to be able to do anything useful.
I had the fan blowing in, and I was getting some sort of backwash around the edges. Kinda strange. I'll try the fan blowing out, see if it works any better.
