I own an old Micron Pro Magnum Desktop System with Pentium Pro 200 Mhz w/ 256Kb Cache. Recently I just bought the faster, Pentium Pro 200 Mhz w/ 1Mb Cache to built my System as a budget Server and realized that those two CPUs are different:-( The 256Kb has a gold plated layer on the top, and the 1 Mb has totally black layer on the top.
So, just wondering whether my old Heatsink will work on the new CPU or I need to buy the special one?
I have a pair of the PPro's you're talking about, with the 1MB cache and black top. They came with a fairly standard HSF--they actually came with an SBC, all pre-built and everything, and the HSFs are nothing special.

Here-ye here-ye, I do hereby dub this thread the 'retro thread'. I still recall when those processors were new. The PPro processors were always owned by those elitist guys who scoffed at everything else. Memories... *starts singing*

BTW, if you start disco dancing in one of those neon-hot-pink clean-room suits from the Pentium MMX commercials, I'll have no choice but to shoot you now.
Granted, I'd be shooting you with a fire extinguisher, but still...
