First attempt at a build and here is what I'm ordering:
sound: sb-live 5.1
video: Leadtek gf2 ti200 64MB
cpu: AMD 1.4 t-bird w/stock hsf
mobo: Epox-8KHA+ (anyone have a better suggestion here?)
ram: 2x256 meg crucial pc2100 DDR
HDD: IBM 20g Deskstar 7200rpm
case fans: Sunons...4 of them
Cases: Enlight EN-72370X3C4(AMD approved)
So, what do you all think? Any comments/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
Also, one more thing. What site do you think has the best 'how -to' advice/walkthrough when it comes to building computers? I know Tom's has a good one so does PC Mechanic...just wondering if there is a better one.
I'd probably save myself 30 or 40 bucks on the motherboard and buy a ECS K7S5a mobo... then spend the extra on getting a Geforce3 Ti 200 instead of the Ge2.

If you install the correct drivers and such, it will run perfectly fine. The SB line is a great line, very functional, lots of extras, and so forth. Just make sure to install the drivers right.
Have you ever tried cooking an egg on your HSF? Tasty.
Sound: Stay away from Creative. Hercules has some nice stuff. The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is nice, too.
Video: Do you mean the GF2 Titanium, or the GF3 Ti200?
Otherwise, everything looks ok.

Why should be stay away from Creative? If he gets the Epox board, it has the newer VIA southbridge that doesn't have all the stupid compatibility issues, and if he gets the ECS board he won't have that problem either.
Even if he was getting a board with the dreaded 686B chipset, it is fairly easy to make the SB Live! work on it. Like we discussed before, I did it and now my system runs perfectly stable and has good sound.
I agree that the Turtle Beach and Hercules cards are better than the Live!. However, I think saying "stay away from Creative" is going a bit to the extreme.
There's my two cents...

He should stay away from Creative because they rip you off for inferior products. Why do they lock their CD-ROMs so you can't do any firmware updates? Why do they sell the LiveDrive ONLY for $149 when you can buy a Live Platinum OEM (w/ drive) for $111. Why do their cards use up 10-15% of my CPU power, compared to about 2% with my Hercules? Why do so many people have problems getting a center channel to work on 5.1s? Why have they not released any fixes for the 686b compatability, even though Via has done their best? Why do they charge $200 for a card that is inferior to my $100 one? Why do they offer refurb products, without giving much of a discount?
I can continue, if you want.

Actually I don't know how many other corps are as big into the sound as creative is. They haven't had any real competition for a while. That's why they Intel you.
They're getting some competition. Hercules and Turtle Beach are producing some great products, and lots of people love Philips cards, although I had a bad experience with mine.

As side from the compatibility issues what other problems have you had with the SB Live line?
Recently their prices fell through the floor and a SB Live Platinum 5.1 can be gotten for under $120 as apposed to the +$200 I payed for mine. This is very competative with the Hercules boards.
Personally I think the sound is great and I've never had any problems with driver installation on a Creative product. They offer you a great selection of software along with the card which more than pays for the card in some cases.
The CPU utilization isn't nearly 15-20% if you remove all of the extra crap utilites. I imagine you do a default install with all the extras to produce such an enormous CPU consumption.
I've run my card in 4 and 5.1 modes without any problems and I've never heard of the center channel problem.
This is the board I reccommend to any friend building a system and I've never heard of any complaints.
??? I'm running a dual MP setup and have and no probs what so ever. OH no fugger. I have two AMD chips I must be the devil. Shut the hell up troll. Damn you make yourself sound stupider every time you post bogus sh|t like that.
