Tracking Cell Phones...

Every new cell phone manufactured has a GPS chip in it now that works with the cell towers to generate a position. This was mandated a few years back to assist in emergencies. If you dial a preprogrammed emergency number your cell phone broadcasts your position to the emergency call center and keeps doing so for five minutes. However, you can turn your cell phone on to continuous broadcast (allowing you to be tracked).

Now Sylvan Ascent has created software for your cell phone that continuously gives you a topo map on your cell phone screen and shows you where you are! This software 'Topophone' also lets you keep track of where your friends are (if they give you permission to program them in I guess).


I guess it is just a matter of time...
Until police get the idea they could tap into your GPS position, monitor it, determine your position & movement velocity (aka speed), and issue a speeding ticket while you are traveling up the road. This may be the motivation for people to turn off cell phones while you are driving.

They've been putting in these polls along the road in Michigan and tesing them out in Ohio.

They monitor EPA ratings of your car as you drive by. There are only a handful in my city and a couple in michigan mainly for testing purpose.

If you're off, it tracks you and can supposedly send you a picture via license plate.

Then they're going to start monitoring your speeding habits.

Most of the intersection in my City have cameras to watch for speeders or red light runners.. But people are complaining it's a violation of people's right some how..
