Hey everyone,

I am looking to do a hard core upgrade as I haven't upgraded my PC in a while and wanted to get some feedback on the best CPU Motherboard combo to use.

I am looking to spend around 500.00 for CPU and Motherboard. Any suggestions would be greatly apprciated.

Friendly recommendations from the Intel Camp:

I assume you mean CPU, motherboard, and anything required to cool the CPU so it will function correctly (Heatsink/Fan). These are my suggestions:

Pentium 4 i850 (takes DRDRAM memory) approach:

Socket 478 Pentium 4 1.7GHz, Heatsink/Fan, 3 year warranty = $192
Socket 478 i850 chipset motherboard = $161
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Total = $352 for CPU, Heatsink/Fan, and Motherboard

Pentium 4 i845 (takes SDRAM memory) approach:

Socket 478 Pentium 4 1.7GHz, Heatsink/Fan, 3 year warranty = $192
Socket 478 i845 chipset motherboard = $97
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Total = $289 for CPU, Heatsink/Fan, and Motherboard

I suggest the i850 solution for performance reasons.
