Compaq presario 12XL300 has windows ME 3years old can't connect to the internet error pops up saying no modem found and no dail tone. I had a freind check it out the modem test says it ok but still not working

check phone line connection,install service provider,with phone numbers,go to safe mode run start up,note,check all your connections

I had that problem too ... but i still dont know how to fix it heheh srry. I have msn and everytime i would try to connect it would not find the dial tone. I had to restore everything and reregister and it worked. ^_^

In your system properties, device manager, does windows report any errors with the modem?

I believe the modem on the 12XL is a mini-PCI card. If so, you should reseat it (There are two slots at the bottom, I know one is for the RAM, and I am fairly certain that the other is for the modem).
