Take the Mobile CPU and build a Desktop?

I have an iBuypower notebook I bought back in July 2009. It has a 2.8GHz CPU of the Intel Core 2 Duo type. The machine is just about dead. I was wondering if I could take out the CPU and make a desktop out of it? Would the CPU fit in the normal motherboards? The notebook was for gaming but my son dropped it a few times so its taken its final drop.

Your C2D laptop CPU is probably based on the PBGA479 or PPGA478 socket motherboards.
Depending on exactly what CPU you have installed you might find a motherboard to match.
