I just bought a Dell 8200 Dimension series computer - Pentium 4, 1.7 GHZ. It has been VERY NOISY - giving out a loud hum - since I hooked it up. Dell has replaced the CPU Fan, Power Unit and Hard Drive - and technicians who came to my home believe it is the CPU Fan. They are sending me another unit, but I think I need a new Fan.

Can I buy a Fan and install it on to my Dell?

What is the quietest fan that can still cool my CPU appropriately?

Help!!!!The sound is driving me crazy....

To answer your first question: yes, if you care for voiding your warranty.

I have no idea about suitable PIV cooling solutions; ask Raystonn about that one.

 Have you ever tried cooking an egg on your HSF? Tasty.

What fan you can use depends on what heat sink you have.

The default heatsink/fan on a Pentium 4 is usually very quiet and very good. It might be a good idea to take the cover off your system and (make sure you do not touch anything inside it) turn it on. See if you can tell with the cover off where the noise is originating. The likely culprits are broken/worn CPU fans, case fans, and power supply fans.
