Is my computer on it's last legs?

My CPU's fan speed runs a 5000RPM while idle, and 5200RPM under full load, but recently when I've been booting up it revs up much higher than this then erratically throttles down to 5000RPM. Has anyone had this happen to them? Why would it start doing this all of a sudden?

You need to update your sound card drivers.

I've never had that happen, but it sounds like your fan is about to die. Might want to buy a new one. PCMods has some good Panaflo fans. Make sure you get a tail for it, though.
Lots of other places have other types of fans.

Wait, what kind of heatsink is it? If it's an Orb (for example), you won't be able to upgrade the fan.

It's a P3 550, the heatsink and fan are attached to the board (it's a slot). I'm not sure that they can be easily removed.

Is there a thermistor on the fan? It could be temperature controlled.
