as ive found out there is no single answer for you.

take this example: generall reccomened max temp is 65C.
On my old mobo (asus a7v133), my cpu was running at 53C full load.
On my new mobo (iwill kk266), the cpu temp is now being reported as 45C.
same cpu.
same hs.
same amount of thermal goop.
so which is correct?
is it now running 8C cooler? doubt it.
why? lots of things... position of thermal diode, distance from bottom of cpu, AIRFLOW under the core. and if the manufacturer is pessimestic or optamistic.
apparently asus boards generally read hotter than others.
so basically unless u put a temp probe right beside the core u wont really know.
the new athlon XP's hae internal diodes... hopefully that will remove the guesswork.

if your cpu works at full load for hours at a time, then its ok.
some people get 40-50C under full load. others have a 'hot' motherboard and use it in hot conditions... thus are stable at 60-70C.

but with everything... lower is always better

Is that a Northwoody in your pocket or are you just eXPited to see me?

Fuzz, the stable temp for the athlon is the one where you dont lock up, be it 65 or 40, if your not getting lockups DONT WORRY ABOUT TEMPS. Trust me.

That's the thing, I'm getting plenty of lockups. Whether it be when I'm playing Madden 2002 or if I'm browsing the web I lock up. Usually, I can move the mouse but I can't click anything and the tower makes a weird noise when I move the mouse. I have no case fans, do u think I should get some? My temps are usually between 40-55C

If your processor locks up from heat, you wont be able to move the mouse, generally heat lockups come with a total system freeze and an endless last .5 seconds sound loop.

That's exactly the noice I get LHGPooBaa! My system specs are:

1.2 Ghz T-bird 266FSB
MSI KT266A mobo w/ 256MB Crucial RAM
Asus Geforce2 GTS 32MB DDR
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
ethernet card
Some Gateway 8X DVD Rom drive
16X10X40 Plextor CD-RW

The only fans I have are the one over the CPU and a blower right underneath the video card. What do u recommend?

*thinks back*
hen i got that kind of lockup it was a software (i.e. stupid windows98) playing up.
everything would freeze, but the mouse was still giving a signal.

i would reinstall windows.
