I'm not veteran, but I disable all power schemes, actually. And whenever I leave my computer on, I just make sure to turn that off, because it uses the most power.

Only thing I do is to have the monitors power off after 20 mins. My PCs all run 24x7.

I leave my computer on 24x7. It turns out that your computer goes through enough power when you first turn it on to run it for 18-20 hours, so it's actualy saving power by not powering it on and turning it off constantly. I have my monitor turn off after an hour, though I usually turn it off myself before that.

I leave my computer running 24/7 also, and turn off the monitors only. But occasionally i run into some slow downs, then we reboot :)

I turn my PC off just before I go to bed. Sometime I leave it running for a few days straight for the P2P file sharing programs. The only power management scheme that I use is turn off monitor after 15 minutes in the Windows power management program. Running Win98SE.

I leave 2 on, turn others off, leave on my linux firewall/router- if I dont then no other pc's can get online, also leave on the 2k system- this goes off and theres no printer, theres also a lot of shared stuff on this box, my main one goes off though, dunno why really, the kids also goes off when not in use. LOL, I often check mail in the morning before work, then leave the pc on all day, few hours on it at night and then off- bit pointless really.

Where did you come by this information? No offense, but it sounds far fetched to me.

I read it several years ago (10 maybe). Perhaps things have changed. I'll do some research and see if I can find any more info on it.

NEVER shut down your HD. It will cause system lockups quite often. Most versions of Win98 can't restart from a system/HD powerdown. HDs generaly stop spinning when not in use, and that consumes most of the power, so it realy is pointless to do so anyway.

Only system I have that doesn't stay up constantly is my laptop. Laptop's also the only one that uses power management.
