I have been using avast for years and been virus free unless you use java on shady website / utorrent

I would avoid relying on MS Security Essentials in light of the article that popped up here some time back.

I personally used the free version of avast for a couple of years before deciding to upgrade to the full suite just for that extra layer. I never had any viruses whilst using the free version though.

I recommend you try Unthreat Antivirus. It's a free antivirus, like you asked and I think it does a great job of protecting my computer. I haven't had a virus since I got it and it doesn't have all the annoying popups a lot of other anti viruses have.
