most books are out of date by the time you read them.

and no book will help you learn the latest. you can learn them by doing them. it needs knowledge of basic theory and a lot of work experience to be a good technician. You need not a PC troubleshooting guide but a good PC technical guidebook like Winn L Rosch's Hardware Bible or Mark Minasi's PC Hardware Book.

And be sure to visit the THG, tomshardware.com, anandtech, xbitlabs, a1-electronics.co.uk, sharkyextreme, socketa, amd.com, intel.com asus.com, viatech.com .........,.........,...........,....... etc. etc. regularly.

thats not always true , and if you don't know anything its better to start with a lite reading then jummping in over your head. The best place to start is i COMPTIA A+ manuel like http://www.quepublishing.com/detail_que.cfm?item=0789724537

if you ask me. taking a course is garbage because you'll just ending up forgetting most of the stuff you learn. to show you how easy these tests are nowadays, i'd like to share my profile with you. I'm a 16 year old teenager and I can already call myself an A+ certified technician, Network+ Certified Technician, and a Microsoft Certified Professional, and all that I had to do was study each test with a study guide for four weeks. If you have the experience, THAT'S ALL IT TAKES!

i would recomand the learn-as-you-go method, its the only real way to remember what you do and not just monkey work.

"before doing ANYTHING... stop and think about whats the worst thing that can happen when u do this, and how can u avoid that."
