Ok so I have recently become temperature obsessed. I am not quite sure why, though it all started when I noticed my CPU temps seemed a lot higher than other temps that I have seen posted on the web.
This is my setup:
ASUS A7V266 Bios version 1002c
AMD Athlon XP 1800
Though I am not currently overclocking I would like to note that the default FSB is over 133MHz on the A7V266.
I brought the retail box version so I would get the 3 year warranty and also because it came with a HSF. Though when I ran Asus PC Probe I noticed that my CPU temp was 65 C at idle and 75 C under load. I thought this was much too high and even though I was not having any problems I went out and brought a Dragon Orb 3. This lowered my idle temp to 45 C and 55 C under load but I thought that it was too loud. Not so much loud but a high-pitched noise that gave me a headache. So then I ordered a Silverado from Noise Control. The overall volume of the Silverado is about the same (both the Dragon Orb 3 and the Silverado are listed at 37dBa) but the Silverado was not so high pitched and is much more acceptable. Though I noticed my idle temps were at 55 C and 65 C under load with the Silverado. I didn’t expect a 10-degree jump between the two coolers. I did clean the CPU but I was in a rush and could have probably done a little better. I am also using Artic Silver 2 as my thermal compound.
So I was wondering if anyone else has a similar setup and what their temps are. All these temps seem really high to me. I am not having any problems so I guess I should not worry nor care but I thought that my CPU life would be greatly diminished. Though I have a three-year warranty so I guess that would cover my CPU if it did die (In three years I will probably upgrade). Also, if these temps are out of the norm why would they be so much out of the norm? Is Asus Probe reliable? Is the thermal sensor reliable? Any thought would be appreciated!
65°C under load is rather high if your readings are correct, but then again, if its stable, I wouldnt worry much. Especially if it also ran stable at 75°C. The silverado is not really suited for 1.2+ Ghz cpu's. In spite of what Tom says, I've read it over and over, and experienced it myself with a 1.4 that also got that hot.
Since I wanted to overclock, I invested in a swiftech.. quite expensive, but it got my temps down by 20 (yes, TWENTY) degrees to +-45° stressed (65 with silverado).
Anyway, maybe its not the HSF, but the case flow. How warm is your case ? how many fans ? what sort of PSU ? Even a swiftech is not going to do miracles if your case gets above 35°C
