i have an athlon xp 1600+ with the retail heatsink. i had to replace my mb, however, and when i took the chip out, the thermal compound hadn't quite set, so the hs and processor separated.

-when i get my new board, do i have to clean all the goo off of the processor die and the hs before i reassemble the pieces?

-what sort of thermal compound should i use, and how much?

and anything else i might not be thinking of (possibly resulting in a smoked processor *grin*)

thanks,
joe

Scrape the goo off, clean it with hot water and dishwashing detergent, and use thermal paste. You can get thermal paste from Radio Shack.

Back to you Tom...

youwill have to clean the thermal paste off. try using a little lighter fluid to get most of it off, then clean it some more with rubbing alcohol. you must do this with the CPU and the HS/F. then you might want to look into getting a tube of arctic silver II and follow the instructions on their website to apply it.
