I'm looking to upgrade to a Pentium 4 1.7ghz, but don't know if I should go with the 478 or the 423 form-factor. What's the difference?

physical difference is the number of pins and thus what motherboard you can use.

realistic differences are far more pronounced.

socket 423 is only upgradable to 2.0Ghz... and even now is in the process of being phased out. NOT a good path for future upgrades.

socket 478 is the way to go... which should support CPU's well beyond 2Ghz and the Northwood chip when it comes out.

personally i would prefer a athlon XP
but what u desire is your choice.
word of warning... it may be a little difficult to find 478 chips and motherboards... i think there is a shortage at the moment, and they may cost a little more than the 423 variant.

well, 478 pin processors as well as boards are both in short supply right now, and available at slightly higher cost than the 423 ones.

probably it is a stock clearance sale by intel, they want to get as many 423 pinners down the customers' throars as possible until they get 478 pin ones out in volumes.

obviously, one should wait for 478 pin ones, and also go for RDRAM ones. P4 + SDRAM is closer to suicide!

Yup.

The 478 pin socket issue seems tohave been mostly resolved. HOWEVER you'll find it next to impossible to find the higher stepped P4's in 478 form.

Lucky for you, the 1.7 isn't a higher step, but is on the low end of P4 speed. It's roughly equivalent in performance to a P3 Tualatin 1.3, or Athlon XP1500
