They are all affordable, the highest end one wont cost you an arm and a leg.

The xp1600 is the sweet spot for price/performance right now.

Make sure the mobo is athlon xp compatable, if it is not, just get the tbird 1.4ghz.

That's why i posted this message, because i don't know if ASUS A7M266 is 100% compatible with Athlons XP, and if it is, what speeds does it support.

The ASUS A7M266 DOES infact support the Athlon XP =)

I had a problem...well my neighbour did actually....he baught the ASUS A7M266 and an AMD DUron 1GHz..(Morgan core) or I should say Palomino based Duron....
well..he plugged it intot ht board..fired her up...and it reads 'AMD Athlon(tm) 1000MHz Processor'
Hmmm....

ok she posts fine...but after the post screen where its suppoed to start to boot up...freezes......
I look and look.....CRAP......older bios.....1004 which is the one which pre-dates support for the Morgan core AND the XP Core...ok.....i called up a friend of mine with a t-bird....popped his chip in there...instaleld Windows ME...Downloaded bios 1005 (Also newest) flashed it....shut down..popped in Morgan...booted up...worked fine..100% stable.......no problems AT ALL....

So..all I have to say for you is that the ASUS A7M266 is an Amazing bored and worx great with the Duron and Athlon XP.....just make sure when you buyt the board that it has Bios 1005 Already on there...and if not, ask the guys at the computer stors to update it for you..... =)

And you wanted to know what speed to get...well the best bang for your buck for the XP is currently the 1600+
You wont break the bank, and it will be Flyign like a bat out of hell.... =) and you can always overclock it later =)

the new XP's are pretty good. a 1600+ should see ya fine. Plus Asus make good stable boards. Just don't ring their helplines they are useless.

I wanna be a hippie and I wanna get stoned yeah.

I tried to find the newest bios update (1005 as you said) from the official site of asus but the only update i found was 1002 and 1003. Where did you get 1005?
Are you sure A7M266 works with Athlon XP1600+? I don't want any compatibility problems...
