Multiplayer gaming problems

Any help would be appreciated on this matter. Here's the problem:

I haven't been able to play any multiplayer games for about a while now. When I try to connect to any multiplayer server (either Half-life or Unreal), the game displays the connection attempt messages (and doesn't go anywhere past that) and my cable connection (AT&T) dies for about 5 minutes. My connection dies if and only if I try to connect to any game server.

I could surf for hours and the connection wouldn't die. I've never had this problem ever in about a year of cable connection use.

My connection is shared through a LinkSys router. I'm having the same problem on both computers. The OS is Win2kPro on one and 98SE on the other.

What is wrong with my PC/connection? Please help me out.

you likely need to find out what port the games use and forward them in your router to your computer ] failing this set up the game computer in a dmz to open all of the ports
