A SENIOR EXECUTIVE AT INTEL has dared to say that DDR will supplant Rambus by 2003, confirming suspicions that RDRAM won't be long for the Santa Clara roadmaps.

to clarify slightly he is saying in the desktop sector only, possibly workstation unless RD-RAM economy scales better. i.e. performance platforms still on RAMBUS, economy/retail on DDR possibly.

Damn, they had better develope a dual channel DDR solution, or QDR solution, or DDR400 solution, to replace the needed bandwidth. DDR266 doesn't cut it for the P4, DDR333 is ALMOST good enough but still doesn't reach the bar. If they want to stick with single channel DDR, they'll have to go to 5ns memory chips for DDR400.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

That would require too many circuites I think, but would otherwise be a viable solution, EXCEPT that it also requires a new standard, just as QDR would. If your going with a new standard, 64-bit QDR is cheaper. And the prices are falling on 5ns memory to the point that DDR400 may be an even better solution. In the meantime, dual-channel seems to be the cheapest solution.

The article mentions DDR-II and talks about 2003 and beyond. Its not like intel is going to replace RDRAM with DDR266
