Currently I think that Socket A motherboards have the best upgradeabilty path for users by supporting Duron, TBird, and XP but I was wondering what the chances are that the current Socket A MB will support AMD's Thoroughbred CPUs coming out next year.

Pretty good.

From <A HREF="http://www.cpureview.com/rev_amdmp_e.html" target="_new">Socket A is here to stay</A>

In their briefing, AMD was placing great emphasis on Socket A being a stable platform with thru sometime in 2003.

I asked if we can count on future Socket A processors being compatible with current Socket A boards (other than Vcore changing) - and I was given a resounding YES as the response.

Socket A is supposed to stay till Thoroughbreds andbartons and probably even further, yet unannounced processors.

You will need just a simple BIOS update to let the BIOS know about the new processor.

Its interesting, P3 has 4 platforms SECC1/2->PPGA->FCPGA->FCPGA2, while the P4 already has two sockets PGA423->mPGA478 and there might be more.

and Duron->Athlon->forseable future socket462!
