Installing separate system and data drives

For my current Windows XP setup, I have a system drive with all apps and a separate data drive. If I do a clean install of Win 7 to the system drive, can I leave the data drive as is, or will I need to wipe it and reinstall the data from backup after the Win 7 installation is complete?

The seperate data drive will not have to be reformatted. Just plug it in after installing Windows 7 on the system drive. If the drive is not recognized immediately, check disk management and make any recognition adjustment from there.
