Setting Up a Router. Should it be just used as a router or access point?

I have a Verizon fios modem but I do not get constant wireless signal to my laptop down one floor. If a access point is required what cable type should run and which access point should I use.

Ya wirless routers are good relatively close depending on model...
Not familiar with FIOS modem.... I have a D-Link DIR-825 it has 2 antennas on back..it's good for a much larger area..

I am not familiar with Verizon FIOS modem, but it depends on the range of the modem. I don't think Verizon will give that cheap modems lol. If it doesn't work out, maybe buy a good decent wireless router and connect your modem to it. Might as well contact Verizon about it.
