My Dell Pentium 4 1.8GHz !!! (a little review)

I got my Dell PC I was going on about!!! As I said in my previous post, I was going to buy the PC and check it out myself before deciding whether I want to keep it or not.

The first thing I did after I unpacked the system was to open the Chassis and have a look inside!!! The case opens like a notebook (with a hinge joint at one end) without the need of any tools! Take a look inside: Open Chassis view

I looked inside and was amazed at how neat and tidy it looked inside. All the wires were color coded. Nothing inside required any tools to add or remove. Everything just slides in and out of their respective slots. I tried getting the floppy drive out by pressing the holder that it was sitting in and it just slided out so easily.

The CPU had a large cooler sitting on top of it. On top of all this was a green, tube-like thing made out of plastic that guided the warm air straight out of the back of the case. Its the green thing that you can see through the case in this picture: Heat ventilator

I closed the case and set up the system quickly since I couldn't wait any longer to switch it on.

After I set it up, I switched the power on. At first, I thought that it didn't switch on since I couldn't hear anything. But then, the display on the monitor appeared and I knew everything was fine. I was surprised that no noise could be heard from the chassis, I couldn't hear the fan. Even the hard disk was so quiet when it was reading the data.

Anyway, to cut the long story short, I played Quake 3 Arena on it, and phaaawwww!!! I was flying in the air!!! The game was so smooth and so realistic. The graphics were awesome considering that the system was using nVidia GeForce3 Ti 200 card. Part of the excitement came from viewing the display on the 19" flat screen Trinitron monitor.

So now that I've got the computer, I am still questioning whether I should keep it or not?! I wasn't able to find any flaws in the system yet (well not in the hardware/component area.) I have a 3 years warranty on all the components.

I ran sisoft Sandra 2001 on it, and the benchmarks were very high compared to the other systems that the software compared them with (I don't have the benchmarks with me.)

I have checked and confirmed that the chipset is intel 850.
The memory is (2x64)+(2x128) RDRAM (not SDRAM).
I have been told by the sales person that the motherboard is socket 478 compatible, but I haven't been able to check this myself. How do I do this??? How do I check what socket the motherboard is? Do I have to look at the motherboard and read it directly from there or is there any software that can do this?

Is there anything else that I should look out for before deciding wheather I want to keep my Dell computer???

If I find any fault with it, I will return it back and get my full refund as part of the money back guarantee they do. Otherwise, I'm happy to keep it.

  1. Benchmarks!!! We want benchmarks!!! 3DMark2001, Quake III Arena FPS at 640*480*16bit then 1024*768*32-bit max. Also, bandwidth test in SiSoft Sandra, Temp info, if you can get it, etc. Also you can find out the socket by removing the HSF. I'd only return the system if something turns out wrong with the benchmarks, say a freeze/crash or extremely poor performance for the configuration, otherwise if everything is a-okay then congrats on your purchase you have a fine system. However from previous experience with OEMs I have a feeling that there might be a catch although I may be wrong.

  3. Better try a 24 hour specialised burn-in utility as well, if it passes that then you have no worries.
  4. lol @ d4n13l. Are you joking?? You want me to burn my system in flames in my first few days?? That test stretches the components to their limits doesn't it? I ain't gonna do that. I'll leave it to reviewers like Tom to do that.

BTW AMD_Man, what is the "Temp info" that you mentioned? Everything else I can get using Sandra, can't I? I'll get the benchmarks by tomorrow.

  5. Don't worry, intel chips have thermal diodes, they won't burn to flames. Don't try it on an amd system though.

  6. I always burn in a system. It stretches the components to their limits, yes, but I expect components to hold up under pressure. All my components do just that.

The burn-in isn't just intended to test a repeatable configuration; it's also meant to make sure that you didn't somehow get a defective part somewhere, and that your system is 100% stable. If your system can't pass burn-in, I would consider it defective--better to find out now while it's still under warranty.

On the other hand, system builders and OEMs supposedly burn in pre-built systems at the factory. If you feel you can trust Dell to do their job, burn-in may be unnecessary. It's up to you.

  10. your amazing nievity/blindness always gives me a laugh...

    keep up the dumb work.

to anyone else, how upgradeable are dell systems?
and the term "478 compatible" doesnt inspire confidence... what does that mean? it can take a 478 chip right now... or do u need a new mobo to do so, but the mobo will fit! :)

Excuse me for a moment. I need to drive my ergonomic wheely chair over a sheet of bubble wrap!

  12. Glad you're thrilled with the PC. Post some benchmarks though. What was your final price out the door?

Stressing the components isn't a big deal and if you're afraid to do it then you should definitely return the system since a system that can't handle it isn't worth keeping.

  13. the 478 compatible means that it is a 478 pin socket. however, dell might decide at anytime not to update the bios to support a northwood if it needs a bios update.
as for upgrading, well, lets just say dell doesn't want you to. They use proprietary PSUs and front panel connectors. A retail board will not fit without some modifications. check out DellTalk in support.dell.com
many people have posted questions about the upgradability of their dells
  14. I'm glad you like your system. They are well built, and I have the same 19" Dell trinitron monitor. I wouldnt change it for anything. Its gorgeous.

You know the problem with Dell's.. and much any OEM system ? Its not like they dont work as advertised. Its not like they underperform if you choose the right components. And yes, they are generally well built, and silent. The trouble will only start in a year or two when you want to begin upgrading. I've had a Dell (P3-500). It worked flawlessly.. nothing to complain. Until I wanted to upgrade to windows2000, and my Dell-isized USR modem wasnt supported by either windows, nor US Robotics, nor Dell under windows 2000. The modem was built by USR for Dell, but they changed it just enough so standard USR drivers wouldnt work. Dell would only support win98 for that modem.
So, I hHad to throw it out, and buy a new one. Same story with my Turtle Beach Montego II. TB drivers didnt work, and Dell wouldnt ship drivers for anything but the default operating system that the system shipped with (in my case, win98). Luckely, these arent very expensive replacements, but still I dont see what a customized dell USR modem is good for, other than give you upgrade trouble.

Then came the hardware upgrade nightmare. 500 Mgz becomming too slow, I wanted something else. No Bios upgrades to support any cpu beyond 800 Mhz (while the board was capable of more). Swapping out the motherboard wasnt easy either, as the format was not 100% ATX compliant. I had to solder new wires for the on/of/reset/leds. I also needed a new power supply as the Dell one was *not* ATX compliant.

All in all, I probably should have sold the machine as it was, and should have bought a new one. If you feel like upgrading regulary, I would not ever buy an OEM machine. If you fine with keeping your PC as it is for a few years (unless perhaps upgrading the video card and/or harddisk or add memory which should be painless), then keep the machine. it will do it its job just fine.

  15. Hey cool good for you.

as for your case. Mine is the same way. I bought an antec SOHO sx1040B file server case. It is just awsome. There is a latch type thing on the side of the case which you can lock. No tools required and opens like a hinge but it does come off. There are 2 3-1/2 like metal bay type things. One holds 2 3-1/2 and the other holds 4 3-1/2. ANd there is a latch on both of them and you unhook it and it comes right out. It's so nice. Also has 4 5-1/4 bays. 2 rear fans and 2 front. One is placed behind the hard drives to keep it nice and cool. Also has a door infront of all the devices which you can lock. When closed it looks like a high tech file server heheh! Even gave you a sticker to put on your case. "antec outside" heheh.

IBM drive cold as a rock btw. :)

I just have a duron 750 for now but it works and super stable.

dude you got a dell! heheh!

that thing must have cost a good buck but dells are super nice. Hope you got a decent warranty plan to cover that nice dell incase something happens.

    Have fun! :)

I don't believe you got a price that low...I just configured a similar Dell system w/ 256 RAM and Integrated Sound, no tax or shipping, and it costs over 2250 US...

Oh yeah...The Dell trintron monitors are crap...Mine became all blurry and the refresh rate isn't that great. I have an LG Flatron 915 FT Plus and it is SO much better...I can't believe I paid more for a worse OEM monitor...

  24. I'll post mine just for comparing an OEM system.

All of these scores are in XP
For the CPU benchmark in SiSoft Sandra i get:
    Dhrystone 3090
    whetstone 1512
    For memory benchmark i get
    Int 440mb/s
    Float 538mb/s
    For "performance test" i get
    170.9 for the entire benchmark
Anyone else use performance test?? Do a search on ZDnet for it if you want to try it. I ran the entire benchmark suite. I would probably get over 200 with a hard drive that is at least 5400rpm.

  36. I agree, you and Intel_inside are nothing alike!

All trolls are Intel fanatics because they don't have the hard facts to back up their opinions.

All AMD trolls are actually not trolls because they have all of AMD's obvious advantages to back them up.

Both AMD and Intel processor have pros and cons but AMD processors have more pronounced pros while Intel processors have more pronounced cons. While this doesn't mean one is superior to the other, it makes it easier to be an AMD fanatic than it is to be an Intel fanatic. Intel fanatics have a harder time proving their point because the advantages of the P4 are not too obvious; you have to think for a while to realize them.

Using this facts, it seems that the word "troll" does not have a clear meaning. I now propose that not only must you be a fanatic of a specific product but you also must be rude, ignorant and arrogant to be considered a troll. That fits AMDMeltdown, Fugger and Intel_inside quite nicely but it doesn't fit Matisaro.

I was referring to the current definiton of "troll". The current definition of troll is a fanatic that blindly supports a product without reason to do so.

Using that current defintion you can automatically assume AMD trolls do not exist due to the constant bombardment of the advantages of AMD being displayed throughout the Internet. Also, you cannot be an AMD troll due to the fact that AMD is less popular than Intel which leads to research, which thereby leads to this bombardment. Intel trolls on the other hand are always uninformed, very biased amd very violent without cause or provocation. This leads me to believe they are subconsiously attempting to comfort themselves. This again implies they are attempting to justify a purchase.

AMDMeltdown, does it look like I am a troll? I never said AMD was better or worse. I never referred to the product, I referred to the fanatics of the product. Notice how I always use the words fanatic not "fan" because a fantaic is an extremist which a troll must be.

My current "leveled" discussions have never been too biased towards any product or topic. I enjoy a good dispute and many times I have opinions (it's only human) but I dislike closed minded fools who have no ethics.

AMDMeltdown, I don't oppose Intel, I oppose you and Fugger and Intel_inside. Being Intel users is mere coincidence. I oppose any pompous(self-important) person who is rude, ignorant, and arrogant.

AMDMeltdown, you realize you will be respected if you consider the other point of view and attempt to make favor with other members of this commuity. If you were to study debating, you would realize speech is an art. If you don't master it in this lifetime you will always be hated and you most likely be a failure.

People don't like others who put words in their mouths (like Matisaro). People don't like to be publicly insulted, like you have constantly done. It is by human nature that people will eventually retaliate at you.

Also people won't take you seriously if you constantly make spelling errors or use slang as it is unprofessional and shows lack of mature thinking. Words like "ROTFLMAO", "macdroids", "ppl" are not respected in this community full of intellectual minds.

Also, complete lies such as "you'll never see me flame anyone talking about AMD." also demean respect towards you.

Now before you reply with more nosense I'd like you to think about yourself and where you are going. Are you sure you want to do what you are doing? Are you sure you're going to come out with something in your lifetime? Or are you a mere uneducated bully who will be lost in this vast world of technology? Think, take sometime to think. Think about what you have done. What would you feel in the position of the people you attacked? Think....consider....

  47. I must admit that I don't have to much faith in trolls. I doubt they will ever fully comprehend or grasp the art of debate. Trolls are very dim-witted. Notice how Intel_inside, AMDMeltdown, and Fugger never actually help others? In fact, they do the opposite many times. They put down AMD users. I find that selfish and rude. Indeed, troll psychology is very different from that of the average user. If I could hazard a guess, I would say they have a lower than average IQ in most cases.

There are many traits that apply to AMDMeltdown, Fugger, and Intel_inside (well, maybe Intel_inside sometimes makes somewhat intelligent posts), that do not apply to anyone else in these communities, further proving my point that AMD trolls currently do not exist (at least on these forums).

However, that doesn't means that AMD users cannot be "trollish" at times. It is possible for an any user to suddenly post a very biased post with no proof to back up their claims. I admit that even I have done that before. True trolls however, are people who are constantly trolling. This again only applies to the three people listed above.

There are many things the apply to AFI (AMDMeltdown, Fugger and Intel_inside) that do not apply to anyone else here. AMDMeltdown's claims of that huge list of trolls cannot be true because they don't fall in the criteria I have listed. AFI do however. 49. To most people here,
Why bother even replying to obvious flame-bait? From most "experts" here, I see more BS responses to idiot flame bait posts than I do actual decent information. It is funny to read, but it does begin to grate after a while. I really wish that some people would show more self restraint, frankly bothering to write an essay responding to trolls is stupid. I am not being personnal here, but why bother to try and make yourself look clever by reply-flaming antagonistic trolls? Surely if you were indeed so above them, you wouldnt bother: Do you stop and argue with abusive drunks on the street, or just ignore them? Thought as much. It just fuels the downward spiral of bitching that most of these "CPU" (Read EGO) topics become. Perhaps if the trolls were ignored, after a while they would disappear as it wouldnt be "fun" anymore.

Anyway, seeing as CPU's are far from the topic in this "CPU" forum, I thought I may as well add some more trivia while I am here...

That is not totally true... just look at George W Bush.
