I just added 512MB to my laptop,and I all ready have a 512MB in there.When I add both of them my CPU does not work I get no boot up just a black screen.If I take the one of the 512MB out and add the 256 MB it works just fine.I have hp pavilion ze4400

Hello bharris09;

Does your HP ze4400 require you to adjust the RAM amount in the BIOS settings?

From what information you provided I'd have to guess that the extra 512MB RAM stick was bad. Was it an identical make/model RAM stick?

Your laptop can handle up to 1GB (1024MB) of RAM. The maximum would be obtained by having TWO modules of 512MB.

You currently have a single 256MB module of RAM.

To test the 512MB module, turn off your laptop completely, then remove the 256MB module and replace it with the 512MB module.

Does this work with just the 512MB module?
If yes, then your module is fine and the problem is either:
a) the second memory slot is faulty, or
b) two sticks must be equal (I don't believe this is so)

FYI, when you have either one stick, or two different sized sticks installed you only get HALF the speed of your memory as with two identical sticks. it may not matter unless your CPU is being held back (probably not).

Summary:
- get a copy of MEMTEST ( www.memtest.org ) and test both modules separately in the slot that you know currently works.
- consider getting a second 512MB module for 2x512MB (1024MB) total
