My wife's Tungsten E can be heard from about 6" away in a very quiet kitchen.
Our "major appliances" aren't in the kitchen, so it actually is pretty quiet in
there, but are in an adjacent pantry/laundry so it's not totally silent.
My Zire 71 is dead silent. I put it right up against my ear and nothing at all.
We got the Tungsten and the Zire for Christmas 2003.
My old Palm Pilot Professional can barely be heard against my ear with the back
light off, and can be heard clearly an inch or two away, and a LOWER pitch (much
to my surprise) with it on.
I've had this since the summer they came out, whenever that was. Years anyway.
My recollection is that the one I had before this (it's a replacement for one I
dropped) was louder.
Great link, though I'm not so sure that using foil near the rest of those
components is a good idea, since it is probably going to conduct.
My T2, now loaned to my wife, has a high-pitched "scream" that can be
heard about 2-3 -feet- away. Its very loud and annoying. When you power on
the unit, you can't help but grit your teeth, its THAT annoying.
Maybe I'll take it apart and see if these instructions will help.
Great link! I have this problem on my T|E - it's very loud, I can hear
it across the room.
Rather than try the surgery (I've opened my palm many times, but this
looks quite fiddly) I'm going to try the over/underclocking method
first.
