Buiding a Pentium 4 with RAMBUS PC800, what determines if I should use 478pin or 423pin CPU? Is there a performance difference? Does one provide a better upgrade/support path?
Looking for advise.

Thanks in Advance.

No known performance differences. Socket478 provides a better upgrade path though; Socket423 stops at 2GHz, I believe.

One problem with that is that Socket478 CPUs are currently in short supply. :frown:

socket478 is your choice for upgradable and a stable platform, don't believe the reports of shortages espacially from fud mongrels w/Inquirer links running around in packs trolling these forums.

Yes, PGA423 pin stays at 2.0 GHz mPGA478 will go upto 3.5+ GHz after which Intel will probably introduce a new package leading to another board upgrade ritual.

Shortage of 478pin chips means Intel is having a clearance sale of 423 pinners! mPGA478 motherboardsare available in plenty but there are no chips to put them on. And vendors are drawing premiums on these scarce chips! And intel is doing nothing about it!! This situation will probably stay till all the 423pin stock is finished, they even introduced the i845 to make them cheaper. What a shame!

List of Socket 478 Motherboards that accept DDR333
SIS645 and I845D Chipsets
good performance and low price ~$100 area

ABIT SD7, SD7

ASUS P4S333, P4S333-FX

BIOSTAR M7SXF, M7SXR, M7SXG, M7SX

CHAINTECH 9SID, 9SJD, 9SID1

ECS L4S5M, L4S5MG, K7S6A

Gigabyte GA-8SDX3, GA-8SRX

JETWAY S445R, S445

MSI M6547, M6559, M6524, M6558

SOYO P4S Dragon Ultra

For the best performance you should get a RDR based $150+ motherboard.

ASUS P4T-E, Abit TH7-II RAID

God forbid you get a SDR, but Asus P4B is pretty nice.

oops, forgot. You wanted to use the RDR.

You have 2 great choices, The Abit costs a little more but you can get onboard IDE RAID. try to get one of these 2.

Asus P4T-E or Abit TH7-II

quite a research FUGGER does, seems he has pretty long free hours at work.

out of the list all will accept the DDR333, but will they run at that speed? i845D will support only DDR200 (reports are it will support DDR226 too), and the only ones left are the non-intel chipsets! VIA P4X266A, ALi P4 and SiS645 all support DDR333. Considering the P4X266 with DDR266 running within 5~10% of a RDR P4 system, the DDR333 system will run almost at par with the RDR system! Only RDR@533/4 will take the RDR farther from the DDR!!! And DDR will win on the cost front!

Again, what is Intel doing? It needs DDR333 badly but they are busy selling RDR!??

DDR333 on i845D will be like a PC133 memory running on a 66 MHz bus! It will accept the memory, thats it! And still run it at half the speed!

Say no to SDR+P4!
