ok here is the deal,

i popped in the xp chip in the motherboard hooked up the HSF and turned it on and nothing. reseated the chip and nothing tried again and nothing and again again and again and nothing. Nothing but a bunch of fans going off and lights binking but no screen. checked the agp card reseated that.. nothing ... popped in the duron and had some hang up problems and i took out the cards (SB live and 3com) and solved the hang problem. but still it booted so it's not anything else. I'm gonna give it one more try. maybe the cards were the problem.

i have the GA-7DXR REV 1.0 and does anyone have any problems with the xp on this board? and do you think it's defective? thats my semi conclusion once i try it one more time.

thanks!

Anytime you put a Live in your case, you're asking for trouble :)

Sorry to hear about the bad mobo, hope you can get a replacement painlessly.

Probably the power supply, the XP does take more power. Could also be a problem with the bus speed, either RAM or the motherboard. But probably the power supply.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

? lol 400 watt power supply isn't enough!? it's an antec power supply! 400 watts! i don't think thats the problem

the ram is PC2400 not a problem there.

bus speed i tried both 100 and 133 speeds

and it is soo not the power supply!

Yeah, those XP's really do suck in a LOT of voltage alright, as I recently found out. As a result, a system may not POST at all as compared to say an older T-bird.

dude new egg rules. Your always bound to buy somethign that is broke. It has happened to me several times. It sucks, but thats why its important to buy from a company with good RMA policies and strive for customer satifaction. New Egg does this for sure. I have spent tons of cash there and have never regreted it. I'm sure if you give them a call and explain what happened they would fix you right up pretty quickly. I don't judge a merchant buy them sellign defective protucts every so ofter, I judge them by the way they handle the situation and work to please me.

New egg will take care of you I promise! I love that merchant!

When I used an Antec power supply I had to raise the core voltage of my CPU in order to compensate for voltage instability. Of course that made it run hotter, and since I was overclocking, limited my speed. So I put in an OEM power supply that was a little more consistant, dropped the core voltage, lowered my heat, and was able to hit higher frequencies.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

"athlon XP problem!"

LOL! AMD quality control at it's finest! aren't you glad you saved a bundle?

"<b>AMD/VIA!</b>...you are <i>still</i> the weakest link, good bye!"

lol i hear ya!

i'd love to go intel but then i'd have to spend a lot of money i don't have. not cheap i spent 300 dollars on videocards just i have this sytem here and works fine and thought to up the cpu speed... thats for 2 years from now.. i think i'll pass this year for upgrade and upgrade the following year, if i have the money, to an intel system.

I work for a distributor, and let me tell you that Intel got as mutch DOA products as any others...the problem is not AMD or Intel related it is just a matter of bad luck.

I was a neutral guy before i started to read this forum,AMD and Intel where two good products for me, but guys like you are starting to make me want to vote firmly toward AMD you are one way minded and pro-Intel people seems to be exacly like you, just plainly stupid to admit that both those CPUs have good and bad points.

Sorry for my spelling i'm french...hey i ain't perfect!

Hey i got a reply from newegg and they are gonna replace it and send it next day shipping and will pay the 10 dollar S&H fee.

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to an AXP 1900. When I put the new processor in, it wouldn't boot. The fans spun and drive lights blinked, but it didn't even get to the POST and no signal went to the monitor. When I put my old processor back in it booted up fine. I have a Shuttle AK-31 rev. 3.1, which is supposedly ready for the AXP, so I thought I had gotten a bad processor. I remembered that I had set the multiplier specifically for my old T'bird, so I set it to what it should be for the new processor and then tried again. The first time it didn't boot, but I tried one more time and then it worked from then on. I don't know if the multiplier setting was causing the problem, but initially I had the same experience as you did where it wouldn't boot at all. Hopefully when you get your new processor you won't have any problems, but if the same thing happens then I'd assume there's something that the Athlon XP doesn't like about your system.
