I have an Inspiron 8100 using WinXP Pro.
When I configure the 'energy saving settings for my computer' using the 'Power Option' icon in the 'Control Panel' I have a problem.
If I have a screen saver selected in the 'Display Properties' the monitor will not shut off.
For instance if I have the screen saver timed to start after 10 minutes of inactivity and the monitor shut off after 20 minutes of inactivity the monitor will not shut off and the screen saver closes and the notebook goes back to the desktop.
But if I select no screen saver in the 'Display Properties' the monitor will shut off at it's set time.
My 'Power Scheme' is set as 'Portable/Laptop'.
Any ideas what could be causing the problem?
I had a few other bugs in my notebook too.
Internet Explorer would randomly freeze and other programs would crash for no reason and cause my notebook to reboot.
I thought it wasn't a good sign when I sent the crash report to Microsoft and they responded to the report requesting specific system information and requested I complete a problem tracking report.
So I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything from scratch.
All seems to be ok so far.
I had been installing and uninstalling GB worth of information prior to the problems. I assume the registry became too unstable. Too many entries not linked to programs.
