How can i connect my laptop to my tv by hmi cable

I have just got my new tv which has a HDMI cable i am trying to set up my pc to my tv, which I have done in my neighbours tv, but this is not working ???? Can someone help me out here ? Thanks

try the display option and check if it is set to dual display.
