First think to check is your power saving options in Control Panel.

Put it to High Performance to see if the screen goes dark as part of the power saving profile it's set on now.

What else could it be? It works good on AC power - works bad on battery.
The reason the battery lasts 5 hours is that it's not powering the LCD screen which sucks a lot of power.

How much did you pay for your last battery - and where did you buy it from?
What is the date of manufacture listed on the battery.

Trying running an operating system other than Windows.
You can download and burn a 'LiveCD' with Ubuntu linux OS for free.
Just boot the LiveCD and it loads a the whole Ubuntu operating system.
If that is also running on a dark screen while on battery you're ruled out any problem with the OS which leaves only hardware as the problem.

Find the Get Ubuntu: Try it on a CD or USB stick option

Can you explain why you think this means it might not be the battery? (the current battery, the prior batteries, etc).
