Here we are winding out 2001 with cheaper and faster machines than ever before...

P4's at 2Ghz
Athlon at 1900+
256-512MB of memory standard for next to nothing
120GB hard drives using ATA133

So what will the next 12 months bring?

Will we hit 4Ghz? Will this be the year of serial ATA? Will all THG readers join a grid project and discover the meaning of life?

What do you want Santa to have for you in his Christmas sack next year?

I predict P4 Northwood will be clocked up to 2.6-2.8 Ghz with limited 3Ghz samples floating around at the end of 2002.

AMD will have released limited samples of thier ClawHammer processors late in the year at a PR rating of 3400+ (Sep-Oct 02). As for the Athlon XP it will have had the Barton core probably with extra cache and SSE2 support (Aug-Sep 02).

You asked:
- socket 7 will be fare out
- socket 5 will de further out
- socket 8 will be even more unknow than right now
- socket 3 well ok we get the picture
OU , love your grid projet, like a THG "seti" projet .
Cool, Count me in, even for some $$$.
Answers cost, i am coming to beleive that.
BTW, the best things in life are free ?
For christmass: free answers to the meaning of life please !

Intel kill the Pentium 4 and release the Pentium 5, which performs much better, but is <i>very</i> expensive. The Celeron will probably die as well.

P.S. The Pentium II and Pentium III lasted 2 years each and Intel have already started developing their next core - it's called "Banias"!

<i>I'm waiting for Serial SCSI. </i>

With Serial ATA arriving is there room for both SCSI & FC-AL?

WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER TYPE OF PROCESSORS

not like currents which function with electricity
but with LIGHT because Engineers are almost at the limit of graver process
(0.13 will attained the limit)
& under we lose the isolating layer between transistors

so they are thinking to replace electronics transistors by something which function with light (or lazer or .. i've to read another time the article to remember)
so transistors out, silicon out, LONG LIFE TO THE LIGHT

note:
IT'S NOTE A JOKE, REALLY

just perhaps about the year...

Don't be stupid 4Ghz ? Most analysts agree they will only hit 3Ghz max at the end of 2002.

" déja vue"

Yes, you are right on about the transmission of photons instead of electrons and the medium changing from actual metals to ??? I think that is one of the hurdles, what physical medium to use to transmit these light signals !

Also, have read that the immediate next level of proc will be of the matrix type(no not the movie). You know, multilayered circuitry. If i am not mistaken, and i am far from infalible, this could theoretically bost up performance by 10 or 20+. Obsticle here is dissapation of the damn HEAT.

Q: When will we start seeing Gigaherz incremented in counts of 33?

I'd guess around 2010.
