I recently built my first system. I purchased an Athlon XP box processor 1.4 ghz. Everything went fine except it only showed up as 1050 MHZ!!!! AHH! Well i asked around, some people said flash your bios... which i did. Still the same. Some said that maybe it was underclocked so i should mess with the multiplier. Except i bought a Gigabyte board which didnt come with that option. Someone please give me some other suggestions, they would be much appreciated.

Gigabyte 7vtxe (AMI Dual Bios)

Make sure your FSB is set for 133MHz. An Athlon's MHz speed is determined by multiplying the "CPU multiplier" (a semi-permanent setting in the CPU) by the "FSB clock" (an adjustable setting on the motherboard). If you have a 1.4GHz AthlonXP set for 100MHz FSB instead of 133MHz FSB, it will only run at 1050MHz.

your processor is running at 100 MHz FSB. set the FSB jumper on the board (refer to the manual) to 133 MHz FSB and you are done.

the processor has a multiplier of 10.5 which gives 133x10.5 = 1400 MHz, but since its running on 100 MHz its just 1050 MHz.

Reading the manual is out of fashion Mat.

I remember someone who was unwilling to read the manual for a game he was playing, because it was named the "The Idiot's Guide to ___" and he "Wasn't an idiot." The guy couldn't do anything.

It's not that bad.

In general though, reading the manuals of these high-tech devices is a good idea. MBs have all sorts of nice things that they talk about in the manual, like how to set the FSB for an athlon XP, and other usefull things. Most people feel it is a sign of weekness to use the manual unfortunately.

Maybe you should make that your next sig:

If all else fails, read the instructions!

It's not what they tell you, its what they don't tell you!
