I want to upgrade my Compaq 7000Z that came w/ 1.2 Ghz AMD (760 chipset, DDR2100 ram) but dont know what the max "plug and play" upgrade would be. Is heat from a faster processor a problem? - I cant find any info on the manufacturer of the Motherboard. (compaq?) Any help would be greatly appreciated !

The AMD 760 chipset often supports the Athlon XP, but you might need a BIOS update to be able to do that.
Is your BIOS some weird Compaq BIOS or do you have an AWARD or AMI BIOS? Compaq doesn't have to be the manufacturer of the mobo.
And yes, often faster CPU's produce more heat, but you can always buy some better heatsink.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .
