The backlight is extremely dim, almost non-visible screen contents. First time problem.

So when the backlight goes off, can you still see the screen contents very faintly? This is indicative of an inverter problem. Replacing it is fairly easy and cheap.

thanks for your help! Could you recommend any reliable sources for purchase and instructions for replacement or is it better done by a tech person?

It's not difficult to do. There are two cables on the board, one at either end - pull them both out, replace with new board, plug in cables. You do have to take your LCD assembly apart, but there's a guide at the top of this forum on doing so.
