I just bought a Diamond Multimedia SupraMax 56i Voice PCI V.92 modem. My system details are as follows:
ABIT KT7A-R mobo
Dual boot XP pro and 98SE operating system
I installed the modem into the 2nd PCI slot, booted into XP, and proceeded to install the drivers supplied with the modem as planned. After rebooting, I no longer had sound, but the modem appeared to have been successfully installed. Whenever i tried to use a sound emitting device, i recieved a windows message claiming the "device was already in use". i thought maybe something was clashing with the sound card (i know how picky this chipset can be with PCI configurations), so i took the modem out, uninstalled it from XP, put it into a new slot, and rebooted. this fixed the sound problem, but XP crashed when it began to find the new hardware. a blue screen with lots of text (more than i had time to read before the OS rebooted itself.) I put it back in slot 2 as well as tried other PCI slots, and it continues to crash when XP begins to sense the hardware. after rebooting the OS without the modem, i get a window stating that "windows has recovered from a serious error." here is the technical info from that error window:
I went and viewed the event viewer and found the error in there as well. here is the info from the entry in the event viewer. It gave the option of viewing the codes in bytes or words. i pasted them both below:

The modem does not cause any of these problems in 98SE. granted, i have not been able to successfully connect to the internet with 98SE yet, but that may be an ISP issue. 98SE does not hang however or crash with the modem installed. it successfully connects to the ISP, i just can't get any data transfer, which makes me think it's an ISP issue.
In case it's helpful, i also installed a logitech cordless mouse and keyboard just prior to installing the modem. i do not know if this is effecting anything, but i do think so.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with this modem? Does anyone have any ideas how to keep XP from rebooting itself to "protect" itself so i can work on the modem issue? Any help or info is greatly appreciated.
