Came home to a shutdown computer yesterday. Tried to turn it on, no video. I am getting 1 long beep, and 2 short which supposedly means "Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information". But I can't find anything that tells me how to correct his problem. I've tried resetting BIOS. Reseating video card, trying a different video card, a different monitor. I don't know what to do, can anyone help?

I just tested the 9600xt in the computer I'm on now, and it didn't display anything. But I put the card back in my computer and I'm not getting any beeps at all now. But the normal post beep is missing too. WTH is going on? The card wasn't overclocked, do they all of sudden just decide to die? There weren't any display problems, its not even a year old. It couldn't have overheated, I have a VGA Silencer Rev 3 on it, and it is running fine. I've tried to overclock it before but not with any success really. I'm in a jam...

Could be a defective Video Card, or failure from outside sources, were there any power surges, outages or storms in your area recently that could be what caused this to suddenly happen, sometimes lightning can really cause trouble for computers, especially if you're not running surge protection that covers all possible entrances into your computer, Power, Phoneline, Cable ,Etc. Even some surge protectors are really useless crap but if you have one with guaranteed payout protection in case it doesn't protect your system then you may consider going a recovery route through them, they cost more than the El Cheapos but are worth it in the end. Sounds definitely like hardware failure for whatever the reasons.

I do have everything running through a surge protector, one with a like up to $20,000 warranty. It's possible there was a power outage because of lightning. Everything in my room was turned off or blinking 12:00. I don't know if it was lightning or not though. How can you check to see if there was a power surge that caused the problem? Is it possible only 1 thing could be damaged?

I reseated the RAM as well the other day, forgot to mention that. I guess I can try different slots with different sticks. But I'm getting 1 long beep, 2 short beeps, but I suppose the 1 long beep is associated with a RAM problem..

Most everybody here knows I'm far from a computer guru but what I sure would like to know is how the heck you came to that deduction .

What do you mean by this ? That it didn't work or that it didn't give you any errors?

if it worked in the other computer, and as you say there was a possible power surge, then I would put my money on the power supply.

if it didn't work in the other computer either I would inspect individual components near the power connection on the video card .

I've seen dozens and dozens of PSU related faults where the machine actually powers up. Nowadays a faulty PSU no longer means it won't power up.

Take the PSU out of the working rig and try it in the knackered machine. See where that gets you.

Beep Code Description

1 long and 2 short beeps is what he said he got when he first tried to post.
Most likely either a bad video card or the video card isn't receiving correct voltage.

This happened to me once and it wound up being corrosion between the video card and the slot.
