I have a p3 with a p3v4x asus mboard, 384 ram, asus agp-v6800 ddr sgram v.3.63 video card. Its about 1 1\2 years old. Acer 76ie - 17" monitor about 6 yrs old.
All of a sudden in the past 2 weeks the monitor shuts down to a wait state and the amber light on the monitor comes on. Onlt way out is to reset or restart. Tried another monitor and it still happens. This happens at anytime, 5 minutes after start up or 1 hour. Power schemes are off, so its not that. Any ideas?

One piece of advise, is to really look hard at what change might have been done to the pc just before this problem started. Any new hardware, new games, apps, any change made in settings of components. If you are certain none of this is in cause than you are getting closer to the solution.
