I bought an XP1800 + ECS K7S5A combo. First of all, the motherboard's default Front Side Bus was set to 100MHz. I had to set it to 133 for my system to run at it's full 1.53ghz. The day I bought it, I played Quake 3 for 5 minutes and it froze. My core temp was around 53C at load and 45C idle. Since then I bought a brand new heatsink (Dynatron), and some thermal paste (OCZ Quicksilver 2). I applied both and after an hour or so of use, I can now play longer, but my system still freezes. I am almost certain it is the heat, but could it be something else? Has some else had this problem? My core temp now is 48 - 50c while playing a game. I can play for 30 minutes with my case fully shut, but then I freeze. Anyone else having a problem? Can someone help me D:. My current idle temp with my new hardware is 41c.

Also - would removing the 4 feet on my processor help any? I'm thinking my heatsink isn't making enough contact.

LEAVE THE FEET ALONE!

Sounds like an anti-tickling chant.

They provide an even suface for the HSF to sit on, so the die of the CPU is less likely to be damaged.

What kind of PSU are you using? I'd hope its at least 350W.

A few people had the same problem over at the "Motherboards & Chipsets" section....

It seems like the chipset overheats when set to 133mhz fsb because ECS just uses a piece of thermal tape between the chipset and heatsink....try putting some good amount of thermal paste between the northbridge and heatsink and see if it helps.

Check your BIOS Date. New BIOS for the board is 12-15-01. This seemed to cure alot of my problems. I am able to run more than 10-minutes without locking up. I removed the heatsink from the chipset. Do it right after running for atleast 20 minutes. Remove that heattape they put on it and appyly some thermal compound. Put a drop of crazy glue on all four corners. Let sit 30 minutes and give her a run.

I run a 1900 XP. In a last ditch effort, I am going to set a fan on top of the heat sink and see what happens. If no cure, out the door it goes.

The CPU temps you're showing normally shouldn't be high enough to cause lockups. What's your motherboard temp, rather than your CPU temp? It does sound more like a problem with the chipset, as the previous posters have said.

I have a 350W PSU. I'm not exactly sure about my board temp, but the last time I checked at idle it was 84F. Removing the tape would involve stripping the orange part square up from the board in this picture - http://www4.tomshardware.com/mainb [...] -k7s5a.jpg - Correct? Thanks for the help so far.
