I am using Windows 98se on a Asus K7M mainboard with a 550 Mhz Athlon cpu and 512Mb of ram. When I play MP3's, it doesn't matter what player, I get breaks in the music when I do anything else with the computer. Can anyone tell me the cause of this? Is it lack of processor power? The sound is built into the mainboard, is this the problem. Would it help to get an sound card?

I didn't do it.

Built in sound can sometimes be very poor. It might be worth getting a soundcard. What video card are you using? Sometimes sound problems can be attributed to conflicts with the video card (or built in video)

K7M
hmmmmm
dont know exactly about that board but it is a via chipset.

i suggest you head on over to http://www.via.com.tw and have a look around for any drivers/patches relivant to your particular motherboard.
that might help

The lack of thermal protection on Athlon's is cunning way to stop morons from using AMD. :)

I have the K7M, but mine doesn't have audio. It's a great board. I have a 750 Athlon running on it with an SB Live (with no problems).

I would try upgrading the sound first. Regardless of which one is causing it, doing this should fix it (it will offload the CPU if the CPU is the weak link).

You can get a SB Live 5.1 for like $32, slower cards for even less.
