Palm Treo 650 VersaMail Question - ISP is AT&T

Last response: in Cell Phones & Smartphones

Hi, I just bought a Treo 650 unlocked and my service provider is/was
AT&T Wireless. I was trying to set-up the VersaMail, however being that
I'm a painter not a techie, I'm having problems setting it up. My
primary e-mail is my domain which is hosted by www.1and1.com (it was
cheap)

VersaMail asks for the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server. I have no
clue what to put in there. I tried ns29.1and1.com which is the server
name for my site but for e-mail I don't know what to put.

I called tech support at Cingular/AT&T and was on hold for 1 hour and
20 minutes. I couldn't take it anymore and hung-up.

Would appreciate it if anyone can help me out with this.

Thanks for the link Jim.

I also found this link:

http://support.cingular.com/cngapp/support/index.jsp

One would think it's simple enough for anyone to understand it, but I'm
still having problems with it. The direction says for Incoming Mail
Server type < pop.yourisp.com > I typed in < pop.1and1.com > comes back
as < err access denied > and also tried < pop.mydomain.com > comes back
as check DNS / IP address can not connect.

As for the SSL I tried both - checking it and un-checking it. I must
have tried a dozen different settings to see if anything would work.

Dear Chuck

The <www.1and1.com> web-site states, in the FAQ section, that the
correct set-up is as follows:

FOR POP3 PROTOCOL
Server Type: POP3
Incoming Server: pop.1and1.com
Outgoing Server: smtp.1and1.com

Account name/Username: Mailbox number (m12345678-0 Can be found under
E-mail Overview)
Password: Your E-mail Password

FOR IMAP PROTOCOL
Server Type: IMAP
Incoming Server: imap.1and1.com
Outgoing Server: smtp.1and1.com

Account name/Username: Mailbox number (m12345678-0 Can be found under
E-mail Overview)
Password: Your E-mail Password

Good luck. Don't mess around with SSL until you have got the basic
system working (you may have to adjust port settings). I personally
prefer SnapperMail to VersaMail, but you should be able to get it to
work OK.

Regards

Hi John,

Thank you for your post. I've tried that and didn't work either. I
guess I'll go to a Palm user group meeting and have someone slap me on
the head and show me what I did wrong.

Anyhow turns out that I got a lemmon from Palm. Out of the blue
sometimes the thing just does a complete reboot and sometimes it just
freezes. These happen when I go online. Funny thing is I called Palm
and told'em that I need to exchange it being that I had the unit just a
couple of days and they tried to talk me into just having it repaired.
After talking to this person for a while they said that I have to go
online to get a RMA #. (So much for the customer service on phone) I
got their autoresponder saying they'll someone will e-mail me within 48
hours - well we're now past that... still waiting.

But I must say when it doesn't crash and reboot itself it is preety
cool.

Try to do a hard reset (described in the manual) and see if the phone
behaves. The hard reset sets the phone to "factory settings" (no additional
software).

If the phone behaves after a hard reset, the problems are likely being
caused by old or incompatible 3rd part software.

Install the update below (to resolve a problem with certain SIM cards)

http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/treo/Treo65...

Finally, try the forums at

http://discussion.treocentral.com/index.php?styleid=1

As far as e-mail is concerned, can you receive e-mail with the settings
posted here earlier? Many systems require you to be originating e-mail from
within their network for outgoing e-mail. Try using cwmx.com as the
outgoing SMTP server...

Hi Aloke,

I bought the 650 unlocked and didn't install any software onto it.
Didn't give me the chance to install anything being that it was
re-booting itself from day one. I have recieved sms the past few days
and everytime I delete a message it alerts me as if I just got another
sms, after deleting a few messages the phone does a complete shutdown
and re-boots itself. (just my luck.) I was about to do the hard reset
few days ago but figured I would rather just have it replaced being
that the problem was right out of the box and I paid $700 for the unit.

As for the e-mail not once has it been able to work for incoming and
outgoing. I also tried the cwmx.com for the outgoing and no success.

Still have not been contacted by PalmOne about an exchange (they said
48 hours now it's been 100+ hours). I'll try calling them again
tomorrow but am tempted to go to their HQ office being that I live only
15 minutes away from.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Hi Aloke,

I did the #*377 and came back with "A reset was caused on 4/17/05 pm
while running Messaging"

I'll try the paper packing and see what happens.

For the e-mail I tried leaving the username and password blank but
would not let go further till I inputed the info.

Thank you for your help Aloke :)

Just for curiosity, in the phone, enter

#*377 <dial>

That will show you the cause of the last reset.

Some are speculating that certain handsets have the battery slightly lose,
which causes a reset at random intervals. They are suggesting putting a
small paper packing on/near the battery to make it more snug.

for ATT, try

smtp.attwireless.net

as the outgoing server with the user name and password blank.

Status update dealing with palmone.com:

45 minutes on the phone talking with two people they decided it's best
to send me another unit. But boy-o-boy they sounded like they were
doing me the favor of even talking to me. I was very nice to them on
the phone and even praised them for the great products they have after
hearing about them. That exprience was like a doctor's vist on the
phone.

Just so you know, you might want to look into palm user group meetings
in your town.
