I'm building a system at the moment using the above mentioned cooler and was wondering whether I'd be best to just use the thermal pad that's on the cooler, or to remove the pad and apply some ASII? I've got some ASII in the fridge, it's just whether or not it's worth the effort razoring off the thermal pad. I'm off to start building the machine now, so I'll come back and check to see if anyone's replied when I get to that point (it's going on a 1gig Duron).

If you don't plan to overclock the thermal pad will do, but remind that you can only use it once; if you remove the heatsink you will have to replace it with something else. This is because the thermal pad melts s little to make better contact with the CPU and heatsink.
If you're planning to overclock you can remove the pad and clean the heatsink, and then you can apply the Arctic Silver.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .

just a reminder.....if u do decide to scrape off the pad....do so with a something plastic....i scraped mine with a razor and luckily found out early enough that it was putting nicks into the h/s metal...ironically, what worked best for me was the plastic case that the razor blades came in!!! it really is easy to do so i would suggest to do it

You're right, you must be carefull when removing the thermal pad, otherwise you can damage the heatsink which will lead to less heat conduction.

Hey, I was just dealing with this very issue... I have a Volcano II (not the greatest HS in the world) that also has a thermal pad. i used ASII as well. my temps ranged from around 49 to 54 deg C, which is pretty high. the other day i took off my heat sink, and it looked like the ASII had evaporated or something, there wasn't a trace of it left! and the thermal pad had melted and made a mess on the die, but didn't seem to be contacting the HS at all.

So, i lapped the pad right off and polished the HS, applied more ASII and fired it up. my temps are much lower now, ranging from 45 to 48 deg C, thought these are still pretty high.

it would be easiest to just keep the pad, but if you remove it be very careful. if you have a Dremel (or the patience) i would suggest lapping (sanding) the HS to a high polish.

I left it on in the end as I don't plan on overclocking. The temps seem fine though, and the machine runs very nicely :). I did attempt to post a message from it yesterday just after I'd finish building it thanking you all for your advice and letting you know what I'd done, but it doesn't appear to have materialised - odd.

Cheers again guys,

i dont think those temps are high....they seem ok for me...dont worry about your temps until they hit the mid to high 50's.
