the time has come to loose sdram an get ddr333 ram.
i just received most of my computer stuff.
the only thing i have to wait for is my one stick of 256 mb pc2700 ram (stupid ups ground).
anyways...as some of you may already know...ive been using my 1.7 P4 w/ sdram for some time now (about 4 months....it seemed longer than that to me). this is my current system:
P4 1.7 (478)
asus P4B motherboard
256 mb pc133 (kingston)
60 gig maxtor 7200rpm
R8500 (retail)
sb live! 5.1 dolbly digital
realtek NIC
win xp pro.
DVD drive....burner blah blah blah...
my new system:
2.0A P4 (northwood)
asus P4S333 motherboard
256 mb pc2700 (OCZ...newegg didnt have kingmax in stock)
the rest of my system hardware will be the same.
anyways...i was just wondering how much of an improvement i would get w/ this setup.
im getting a horribly low 6473 in 3dmark2k1 and a really sad 7003 in 3dmark2k.
im getting low to mid 40's in UT (thats pretty sad) and around 150 to 170 fps in quake.
i just wanted to let you guys know.
btw...if anyone wanted to know why i didnt get an amd system instead...
i was thinking of getting an AXP 2000+ w/ an nForce board until about last week...when i installed a new HSF on my P4.
long story short...i didnt check to see if the heatsink made contact w/ the cpu (which it didnt) and i accidently ran my own test of Tom's Hardware: Hot Spot - How Modern Processors Cope With Heat Emergencies
anyways...my P4 survived and i thought to myself..if this was an amd cpu (not athlon xp because i bought my P4 before AXP came out with its thermal diode protection blah blah...)...i would have have a char broiled cpu.
after that...i decided to get a P4 just for safety reasons...and besides...the northwood has better overclocking potential than an AXP (i already know....clock for clock....AXP is faster the the P4 and is cheaper and is the smarter choice etc.)
just for the record....if i have been more convinced of AXP's thermal protection...i would have had a sticker on my case that said: "Powered by AMD." (w/, obviously, an AXP pwering it).
