I am running a TX97-XE Asus Mobo with a K6-266 MMX overclocked to 300mhz, and was woundering if I would get a bigger boost in Quake running a K6-II 400 or 450? I am stuck with a TNT2 M64 video card and have 512MB.
Thanks for everyones help!

No brainer dude. Faster CPU = faster computer with all other factors the same. Also the 400 & 450 have 100mhz fsb, compared to 66mhz in the 266 model, unless you fsb overclocked....

OK, your using a TX motherboard, see <A HREF="http://www.asuscom.ru/products/motherboard/pentium/tx97-xe/tx97xe-jumper.html" target="_new">http://www.asuscom.ru/products/motherboard/pentium/tx97-xe/tx97xe-jumper.html</A>
This board will operate a K6-2 at 450 or 500MHz, using 6x75=450 or 6x83=500. To get the 6x multiplier, use 2x, as K6-2's will interpret 2x as 6x. Use the 2.1v setting if avialable, or the 2.8v setting only if necessary. Use a Socket 462 Athlon cooler as these are oversized enough to protect the K6-2 from overheating at such high voltage settings.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Is this 2x to 6x K6-2 Multiplier deal work with only with Asus (non-Super7) regular Socket 7 boards? I saw an article once @ THG about something like that.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

Forget the THG article. He suggested using an adapter that most boards don't need! The 2x=6x is done by the CPU itself and works on ALL BOARDS that accept K6-2's (most do, even though they don't say so).
To get 400, use 2x=6x66.6MHz. To get 450 use 2x=6x75. To get 500 use 2x=6x83.3. These speeds work on every board that supports the corresponding bus speed and doesn't have a BIOS lockout for the K6-2.
You can run a K6-2 anywhere between 2.1v and 2.8v as long as you keep it cool.

that older board may not support the 2.2V core voltage, so its actually blessing in a disguise that you have to set the core voltage higher anyway to overclock it.

if you have a K6-II 400, you can easily run it at 500 MHz as crash said, using an oversized cooler.

Crashman's info is of course right on.
If those are your only choices of cpu (perhaps because you have a deal on these) well you could overclock with the bigger fan.
Personnally, have the Asus P55T2P4 whitch is older than yours' and have done the 2.2V / 6 X 83.3 for a K6-2 500+ cpu. If you can get your hands on a K6-2 + or better still a K6-3 or K6-3 + cpu, do so as the bigger L2 cache will give you even better performance.
If you're revision is 3.01 or later, by all means set cpu core voltage too: 2.1V
I presume you are talking of Quake 2. With these upgrades it will run very nicely.
If you mean Quake 3 you might have some "jagginess" = below 30 FPS. That is what i have. Can still be interesting. Of course unload all apps from start menu with msconfig.
I have tnt-1 16meg pci & 128meg edo so you should get better FPS than me.

Are we really ready for "contact" ?<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by pike on 02/03/02 10:32 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
