Dimension XPS T500 and Q-Tec HDD Case

My friend bought a Q-Tec 750H USB 2.0 HDD case and a Maxtor 120GB HDD
(6Y120P0) for use as a portable backup for his Dimension XPS T500, which is
fitted with a USB 2.0 PCI card. The PC runs Windows 2000 Professional.

Whenever the case was connected to the PC, the PC promptly died with a
BSOD:-

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NOPAGED_AREA
Address 804203B1 [varied] base at 80400000, Datestamp 4047db83 ntoskrnl.exe

The same thing happened if the PC was booted with the HDD already connected.
A 20GB Western Digital WD200 drive was also tried, with the same results.

The two HDDs were tried on two other non-Dell PCs, with no problems.

We tried a Hitachi Deskstar 120GB drive (IC35L120AVV207-0) which I had, and
that worked OK. The Maxtor and Hitachi drives have near-identical
specifications, so we have swapped HDDs and he is now happily using the
Hitachi drive.

Can anyone explain why the Maxtor and WD drives couldn't be used with the
Dell?

I don't know - we didn't try that.

Since we no longer have the problem, I don't think we will swap the drives
around again (we live 20 miles apart) unless you think it will lead us to
the answer. The reason for asking the question in the first place was in
case the problem indicated some incipient condition in the hardware or
system software that might lead to problems in other areas.

The Maxtor did successfully connect to another PC with USB 1, where we
formatted the drive.
