i am going to get an alpha 8045 for my cpu. i have a dragon+ mobo and i believe it needs a fan plugged into the cpu fan connection on the mobo. if i get an 80mm case fan that has a 3 pin connection will the mobo connection output enough power to run the fan or will i have to run it off of the power supply?

most mobos will let you disable that. Doesn't the Alpha fan have a monitoring header?

Failing that, yes this is what you'll have to do.

low powered, low speed 80mm fans usually use the monitorable 3pin wire.
mid and high speed fans use the 4pin molex connector.

SOME high speed fans are extra good, providing a seperate wire with a 3pin connector so u can monitor its speed.

the 4900rpm delta that came with my MCX-462 is like this, and i know that another fan exists too... sunnon possibly.

The lack of thermal protection on Athlon's is cunning way to stop morons from using AMD. :)

Check how many amp the fan is, I think a 0.3A fan in the max you can put on your mobo, but you can look in the manual if it says anything about a max.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .
