Loading backup img after ram hardware change

I apologize if this is the wrong category. It was either here or in "Motherboards & Memory"

If I make a backup image of my entire computer (not just pictures, documents, etc) with 2 sticks of 1GB memory and then I upgrade to 1 stick of 4GB memory, will the backup image still work? or is the backup image also inclusive of the hardware at the time of backup and thus the new hardware would conflict?

I know the simple answer is just backup after the hardware changes, but I was just curious.

The OS really doesn't have drivers for specific RAM. You can change ram without affecting the OS or drivers. The original backup will be good.
