Getting ready to upgrade. I see XP1500 for $98 and Athlon 1.3Ghz for $85. Any reason to go with the XP?

Also which RAM is best to use here (prob. KT266A or SiS735 mobo) - 256MB of PC2100, PC2400 or other?

It's faster, and generates less heat.

Get the XP and for ram, pc2100 or pc2400? what brand ya looking to go for? Well my friend tested a stick of crucial pc2100 and a stick of corsair pc2400 and the pc2400 was a half percent or less faster for about 10% more in cost. Your choice my friend..

Good point on the heat.

I thought the XP1500 ran at 1.3Ghz (or there about). Are you basing your comment on other benefits of the chip?

The XP1500+ runs at 1.33GHz but due to design enhancements it generates 20% less heat at the same speed as the T-Bird. Also, with SSE, and hardware data-prefetch, you'll get about 10% improvement in performance in some tasks.

I would say about only 0-5% more preformance.
it seemed like 15% but thats mostly becouse the XP was the first processor to get benchmaked on KT266A.

Check AnandTech benchmarks on the XP lunch
they test "regular" Athlons as well as the new XPs
on the same system - and at same clockspeed the new Athlon XP doesnt seem to be much of a boost..

The xp supports sse. You need a p4 for sse-2 support however.

hmm, well, SSE2 is a seemly powerful technology when used properly but I don't see it becoming popular for another 1 or 2 years.
