Right now I have a p3 500mhz that is decked out. It just is not cutting it any more. I want to keep this PC just the way it is without stripping it of anything. I am ready to purchase a new PC. Not from a large retailer of course. I do not want to get a high end rig though. But in the same respect, I want to be able to play current games and soon to be released games in a decent resolution with a decent frames per second. To give an example of my dilema. Should I purchase a fully loaded -p3 1ghz? Or should I sacrifice some of the higher end stuff and get a p4 or Athlon? Tell me what I should get. Thanks for any input.

Best value is on an Athlon XP1800+, Iwill XP333, a nice 7200RPM drive, and some PC2100 (or PC2700 if you can find it for a similar price). Add the video card of your choice, whatever you use for networking (NIC or modem), etc.

For modems I recommend a Lucent/Agere 1646T00 chip modem, very good quality for around $15.

You pick the video card, look into the video cards forum for answers based on the amount you want to spend.

I recommend a good 350W+ power supply.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Right now the currect price/performace champion is the 1.6A Northwood from Intel. with the ability to overclock over 50% and $140 pricetag. This chip performs extreamly well at the stock 1.6Ghz speed too.

So match up the 1.6A with an Asus P4T-E or a Abit TH7-II motherboard and you will be very very happy. unmatched stability and performance.

The P4 1.6A is .13 micron with 512K cache at full speed.

AMD has not moved to .13 Micron yet like the Intel P4.

The .13 Miron die is cooler, less voltage and capable of higher Mhz on AMD and P4. but the AMD is not available for a few more months.

Only if you plan on overclocking.

The winner of price/performance at stock is the amdxp1700+.

The chip does not perform extremely well at stock, in fact it sucks at stock, at stock the p41600a performs about the same as a axp1500+, which is 40 dollars cheaper.
