parent recently got a new laptop (READ: not quite as crappy as the old one).

i was somewaht suprised to find it contained an AMD CPU in the form of a K6 380Mhz processor.

i never knew amd made a 380mhz cpu... and what bus speed is it running on anyway?

the laptop is a toshiba something (ive forgotten)

Overclocked athlon 1200C @ 8.5 x 166FSB + PC2700 = GOOD!

Is that even existing on K6s? I'm more surprised to find an old AMD laptop like this one! Didn't think they did them.

The other day I heard an explosion from the other side of town.... It was a 486 booting up...

The 95mhz bus speed was only used in the 380 if I recall. They are fairly rare. My (unconfirmed) opinion is that they didnt run at 100mhz so they clocked em down a bit to sell as 380s, but again that is not confirmed in any way. K6 chips were very common in notebooks of the time as the mobile part was far cheaper then Intels.

indeed.
and its actually a nice little performer... wont win any awards, but much much better than the 233MMX she had before.
that was one crazy chip... benchmarked more like a 166, all over the place, never got a stable reading from it... and i double checked all the power settings.

ahh well...
now the family has two AMD powered systems

Well.....the K6-2 380MHz Chip came in 2 Flavours........one was 66MHz FSB Based, the other was 95MHz.......

And as far as beign the only K6-2 at 95MHz FSB....no its not......ALL AMD K6-2 333MHz chips were 95MHz FSB based also.....seeing how AMD Incorporated a 100MHz FSB starting back in the K6-2 300MHz chip....the only K6-2 processor which had a bus of 66MHz was the first one, the K6-2 266.....

This is true...but I didn't mention it as it was proven that anythign over 500MHz on the K6-2 line on .25 Micron process was not ALWAYS 100% stable....every chip varied.....and this si why if even till this day if u go into a computer shop, and if there selling any K6-2's, the fastest that they'll carry is the 500MHz chip....

I cant argue about there not being any other 95mhz AMD, however I can tell you they made 333/66 chips, as well as alot of 100 mhz speed grades. Out of many I sold and dozens more I worked on the only 95mhz bus one I came across was the 380. In any case if he is lucky he has the 95mhz version as they are very common in laptops.

Yes.......there were a few 95MHz FSB Versions....as far as 66MHz FSB Based K6-2's...i was wrong.....AMD Also made 300, 366, 380 and 400MHz K6-2's based on the 66MHz FSB....it was for upgrade purposes mostly and are EXTREMELY rare......

380 on a 66 mhz fsb is not possible. 400 is possible but only with a 6x divider and I never seen any official AMD chips that supported it @66mhz. The 380's were merly 400's downclocked for notebook use, which allowed for a slight drop in voltage, which is important for notebook battery life. They also made a flavor of k63's @ 380.

It's not what they tell you, its what they don't tell you!

They also made normal everyday desktop 380's as well. I have seen 6x mults on some boards but not all. The 380's I have come across have all been 95mhz bus speeds. I remember one in particular that the board the guy had didnt support 95mhz so we set it to 366 (5.5 * 66) which is the best his board would do, 100*4 crashed alot =(
