Like all of Lorre's work, I feel that it just tries too hard to be funny, and in doing so makes some missteps (I tend to cringe at a lot of the bad jokes). The characters are shallow stereotypes of the classic "nerdy guy" archetype. Maybe it's because I don't know any real geniuses, but I strongly dislike pretty much all of the characters and find them unrealistic. They've been playing the "hopeless nerd" thing into the ground since day one.
If the characters would have grown and matured instead of remaining stalwartly pathetic, I might like them more. They are around women and travel in all sorts of social scenes. They would have to eventually lose some of their awkwardness (I'm not saying they have to become suave womanizers, but they should at least be able to talk to girls
).
At any rate, I've got seasons one and two on DVD; I like the show for the most part and many of the situational comedy elements are really funny. I hate the studio audience and the laugh track, but what can ya do?
Also, 30 Rock is by far the best comedy around right now -- plus I miss Arrested Development.

I agree with the awkwardness, sometimes its just too much as this is not a realistic nerd and the use of the stereotype in the show is too much.
But seriously, even with that this show is still great, and if your a nerd and you're watching this show and don't like it, its NOT because you don't relate to most of the jokes, but probably because your insecure and lack self confidence.

You see, you + are = you're. But what do I know, I like to start sentences with "but"
Seriously, though, I don't agree with you on this point. Let me translate what you said into normalspeak:
"If you don't like this show, then you're insecure", and there's the further refinement, "If you don't agree with me, you suck."
Could it be that the show is written poorly? Could it be that the characters are underdeveloped and the awful studio laughtrack gets in the way of any good that the show could have done? Could it be that the show has yet to see a single realistic character with a personality beyond, "Oh, gollly, guys! I sure hope that pretty girl notices me!"
Fine, call me insecure. It's your right as a forum-user to attack a person for having an idea. Just have the decency to admit that people can have a different opinion than yours, or at the very least admit that "The Big Bang Theory" suffers from more problems than "GuitarJanitor is insecure about watching it".
I'm thinking about getting season 3 on DVD. Good stuff.

I didn't mean to attack you personally or anybody on the forum, its just what I've witnessed with some friends of mine, they don't like the show and they don't have a reason. You might have a legit reason like you think the show is written poorly or the characters are not realistic or/and contain a very high nerd stereotype personality and that's totally cool man. Anyway, on that note, aren't the characters in most comedy sitcoms like such always fake. They always seem to get into these troublesome and awkward situations that could be avoided easily if only they can hear you talk to them through the TV. haha. Besides for maybe charlie sheen for his role on two and a half men is pretty much his life minus the drugs and kids.
About the grammar, doesn't really bother me to use proper grammar on the internet when in a non serious / professional situation.

Haha. You're right about the Sheen. Funny about two and a half men just basically being what he does anyways. At any rate, I like BBT and all. It's good for a few laughs, I just think there's better TV out there. It's a good show to watch in-between other stuff.
Just jerking your chain about the grammar thing, dude XD No worries.

I usually catch stuff like that in syndication. so I'll have to catch up with it to really say.
but i think the one where they have all there computer stuff ripped off. Sheldon's way of dealing with "hard times" was very funny and smart. I think it's contemporary of our dependence on computers and gadgets.

Sheldon is obviously the heavy weight of the show. I think Howard can be funny and this is the perfect comedy role for him. as far as the dude from Roseanne and the Indian character with the fake accent, do we really need two straight men?
we have already seen the rise and fall of penny as far as her relationship with the "crew". not really sure why she is part of the show, the dynamic contrast between her and the boys is two great and relies too much on the stereotypes of both "nerd" and "dumb blond". I mean talk about hurting peoples feelings with this show, but it is a fact: most of us are the "common people" and the smart and gifted amongst us can sometimes make us feel a lil small as far as our lack of it. the show however, I believe exploits the laugh factor whenever the two classes clash. weather thats Penny's "common scene" when it comes to the boys scoring with her or the boys "IQ" when it comes down to Penny's ability to relate.
I also agree with guitarjanitor as far as the show making missteps. Sheldon will always answer from his mentality and yet dose not understand sarcasm. at the same time he will dumb-down his responses that clearly indicate he does or can understand things like sarcasm. there is definitely a misstep in that somewhere like the show picked up where the 80's left off and it's a new thing that an extremely intelligent nerd does not "understand sarcasm" maybe it's some dark Spock joke, I dunno. maybe it's his age that makes it come across like it's still so fresh.
still, I like the show and even though I can't understand everything Sheldon says I still get the joke sometimes. I like the one where Penny tells on Sheldon to his Mom. they seems to come to a happy medium and that it's "understood". I would like to see both character's become better with time.

I love The Big Bang Theory! I'm actually watching it while posting this at the same time
.
I find the jokes in the show to not be as "nerdy" as people think they are. They are more self deprecating then anything.
Regardless, even though it may not be the funniest show on the air right now (that award goes to Community), I still enjoy my weekly dose of Sheldon, Leonard and Penny
